I grew up at Riverview. I figure skated, played hockey, coached, and it was my first job. It's really upsetting that the Park District never really maintained it over the years...especially once Carlson went in. It's like they wanted it to fall apart so they'd have an excuse to get rid of it. Even still, it has more personality than Carlson ever will and it provides somewhere for folks on the other side of town to play hockey and skate.
In all my years working and practically living there, the ice time was full up from early to late and there are more programs now than there were back then. If the PD closes Riverview, there are a lot of kids that aren't going to be playing hockey anymore because the figure skaters and the travel teams have always gotten priority. The in-house leagues and special programs will take a hit because there won't be enough ice time to go around.
I would also like to play again and I know that a lot of the adult leagues will also be on the chopping block because our games were already at 10pm.
This whole situation is stupid and I hope that we come out of this with a beautifully-updated rink that everyone can use downtown. The idea that a building from the 70s is past its prime is ludicrous. On the contrary, Riverview has loads of potential. Those of us who keep it busy all the time know that and it's a real shame no one asked us.
